Marco Island & Naples: Stronger after IRMA!

Posted:

fullsizeoutput_15ebFirst, we’d like to thank all of our wonderful Horizons Real Estate clients for their kind thoughts and prayers as Marco Island weathered Hurricane Irma. We were thrilled that most of the damage to the island was superficial, and it was truly amazing to see how quickly the island returned to it’s typical paradise-like atmosphere! Power was restored to much of the island within the first week. Publix and many island restaurants were also opened in the first week as well. Our gorgeous beaches remain in their pristine condition and are ready for your beach-walks and shell-collecting! On the real estate front: Within the past few weeks, our office has seen a record number of home sales for this period, and because Marco Island and Naples fared SO WELL during the storm, even more people have become aware of our area, it’s beauty and strength,  and are now flocking to move here like migratory birds!

The Wisdom of the Ancients

For those of you wondering how Marco Island is doing after Hurricane Irma, you can breathe a sigh of relief. The Calusa Indians, who chose Marco Island as a location for one of their Southwest Florida settlements, clearly were wise in their thinking. They knew that Marco Island was at higher ground and would do well in storms and hurricanes. Despite the eye passing right over our island, there was no large storm surge as predicted and only a few homes were affected by water. There were many downed trees, yet our power was restored by LCEC in just a few days. Many our island’s restaurants opened up right away to feed first responders and linemen and locals alike!

What can you expect when you come back?

The beaches are STILL GORGEOUS! Yes, our beautiful beaches that draw people from around the world, weren’t really affected by Irma and are just as relaxing and breathtaking as ever! Most beachfront hotels and businesses are open. While the Hilton hotel is closed, their new beach bar has been remodeled and is lovely, airy, and has a feeling of upscale beachiness! Try it! The JW Marriott is open, all restaurants and bars are open! The Marco Ocean Beach Resort will open back up on October 18th.

While you can expect to see some tree debris that’s been stacked along the roadsides for pick-up, the rest of the island is looking like the typical tropical paradise that we are used to.

How you can help:

VISIT US! Because of the economic loss during the weeks that storm repair occurred, businesses and their employees (everything from hotel and restaurant staff, to mainenance workers, etc) lost income for a while. They need you to patronize their restaurants and stores so that they can recover as well. This secondary effect of the storm can be lessened by the simple act of your eating, drinking, shopping and staying at their establishments!

SPREAD THE WORD! For those up north and in Europe who are under the impression that things are not the same here, please spread that word that Marco Island is on her feet, and is as beautiful as ever!

MAKE or KEEP your reservation to stay on Marco Island! For the past several years, it’s been tough to get a seasonal (or even month-long stay during the winter season) spot here on the island. There are now a few to be had for some lucky folks who make the move now to reserve a winter vacation stay here!
